All along the way I've paid a ridiculous amount of money in 'bulbs' because in every other application the short throw output is fantastic and the current draw is just a bonus. I absolutely love every application of LED light EXCEPT for retrofitted headlights. I bought my first LED bulb for a vehicle in 2002 ($) and have been swapping my vehicles and households since ($). Longer service life - HID lamps will last 3 to 5 times longer than halogen bulbs. Whiter light - The color temperature of HID lights are much closer to the color temperature of natural daylight. More light output - uses about 1/3 less than conventional lights (55w vs 18w) and is more efficient. Some of the advantages of HID lights over conventional halogen lights: The amount of light produced is greater than a standard halogen bulb, while consuming LESS POWER, and more closely approximating the color temperature of natural daylight. While LEDs are marginally brighter, the difference in visibility between LED and HID is negligible as both provide excellent illumination. To operate, they require ballasts, which supply proper voltage and control current. LEDs and HID headlights are significantly brighter than traditional halogen bulbs. The light is emitted from an arc discharge between two closely spaced electrodes hermetically sealed inside a small quartz glass tubular envelope capsule.
